Do something that scares you
I have to tell you. I did one of the scariest things of my life last weekend. I was sweating on the drive up. Panicking. Scared. Anxious. Uncomfortable. Do these feelings sound familiar? I was on my way to go Country Line Dancing. There are two things in life that scare me: swimming with sharks and country line dancing (in public). You see, I was on vacation visiting a friend of mine in Texas. They have this little thing there called “the two step.” I think some may even call it the “Texas two step.” I practiced a few times before going out. Watched a few YouTube videos and thought I was about 62% ready. Ready to dance like Travolta in Grease. “I got skills they’re multiplying…” that’s at least what I kept telling myself. Lol. Is it bad, that I am cracking up laughing as I’m typing this message to you? We walk in the door. Cowboy Boots on. Ready to boot scoot and boogie. We approach the dance floor. My heart sinks. Their “two step” and my “two step” were about as polar opposite as the Democrat and Republican parties. Did I turn around and walk out the door? Heck no! I went out there and TRIED my absolute best. Stiff legged and all. I had a great time. With great people. Great music. Some may ask how you can have such a good time when you weren’t the best at it. It felt so good to try something that makes me uncomfortable. Scared. Challenging. Life is not just about “what you do,” it’s also who you do them with. People who challenge you. Force you to do things you didn’t think you could. Things that make you cringe. Was I the best? Nope. Did I know EXACTLY what I was doing? Nope. Could people tell I was not from there? Probably. My only concern was someone elbowing my friend in the head because of my poor two stepping abilities. But it didn’t matter. I did something that challenged me. Something I was so nervous to do. It felt so great afterwards. So great that I am going to be taking weekly “two step” lessons. I might even be tracking my progress on Facebook. Not to brag. But, to INSPIRE YOU to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable. Sound familiar? Afraid to walk into the gym because you are scared, uncomfortable scared. Afraid to walk into church because you are nervous or afraid. Afraid to… fill in the blank. Friends, I am challenging you to TRY something that makes you uncomfortable. Scared or nervous. Take notes on how you feel afterwards and the results that come. You go to the gym for the first time. The next week you are signing up for a weekly class. You go to church for the first time. The next week you are signing up for a weekly fellowship or Bible study. This stuff happens. Trust me. It happened to me. I was nervous and scared to do BOTH of those things. But after trying them. Feeling uncomfortable. I signed up. I was motivated to BELIEVE and have FAITH! You can do it! I have faith in you.
